What Is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is based on a method called selective cryolipolysis. The principal behind the method is simple. All cells can be damaged and destroyed through exposure to cold temperatures. However, the cells in fat tissue (known as adipose tissue) are particularly vulnerable to freezing temperatures. This is good news because it means that with a controlled application of targeted cold temperatures, fat cells can be destroyed without harming other cell types such as skin or muscle. By controlling the targeting and application, rate of freeze, and duration, it is possible to kill fat cells with temperatures that have no effect on other cell types.
A study that appeared in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal called, “Broad Overview of a Clinical and Commercial Experience with CoolSculpting” showed that the technique employed by CoolSculpting could effectively reduce subcutaneous fat volume. Even more compelling, a researcher in the study likened the results delivered by the treatment to be comparable to liposuction when compared to a multi-session course of treatment.
Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting requires no invasive surgical procedures. Treatment applicators are cup shaped with a suction that draws folds of fat into the applicator so that the controlled freeze can be applied to both sides. There is no pain and no anesthesia needed. Slight temporary numbness from the cold device may occur but the skin is never “burned” or affected in any adverse way.
Within two to four months, the fat cells that were destroyed in the treatment will have been assimilated by the body. When those dead subcutaneous layers of fat have been absorbed, then next layers will become more susceptible to targeting from targeted cell “freezing”. Therefore, the average patient will require several treatments with about six to eight weeks between applications. Each individual will require a different treatment plan in order to achieve visible results that you can be proud of. At Metro Laser, we’ll help you plan your treatment duration and discuss expectations based on your unique situation.
Common Uses Of CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting can be used on any area that a patient wants to reduce fat, provided there is sufficient fat in the area for the applicator to attach to through suction. The most common areas in which patients benefit are:
- Abdominal Fat
Abdominal fat or belly fat is the most common application for CoolSculpting. Even patients who exercise regularly struggle with belly fat. Our treatments can give you a powerful advantage in fat reduction around the belly even if diet and exercise don’t give you the results you are after. Abdominal treatments may be done with a single application or up to 3 applications where the device is used on two sides of the belly and then the center. We will be able to recommend how many applications you should have during your consultation.
- Double Chin
For many, a double chin can appear through heredity, even if they are not overweight. Like abdominal fat applications, treatment cycles for the chin can be done in sessions consisting of one to three applications. A single application takes about 35 minutes.
- Saddle Bags
Saddlebags are the fat bulges in the hip, thigh, and buttocks. Some patients are pre-disposed to accumulating fat in these areas and may struggle to reduce it through exercise alone. CoolSculpting effectively reduces fat that causes saddlebags with results visually apparent with as little as two treatment sessions.
- Love Handles
Love handles, the pockets of fat on the sides of the abdomen above the hips, can occur due to many factors. Even with a relatively healthy diet and regular exercise, love handles may develop with stress-induced increases in cortisol, metabolism slowing due to age, sleep deprivation, and many other factors. CoolSculpting can dramatically reduce or even eliminate the appearance of love handles with just a few sessions.
- Back Fat
Back fat can also translate into “bra fat” for women. For men, back fat can obscure muscle tone that they’ve worked hard to achieve. Building muscle does not automatically mean fat loss or visible definition. CoolSculpting can help you to achieve a defined back and reduce or eliminate back rolls.
- Male Breasts
Gynecomastia, sometimes referred to as having “man boobs” is not just a condition caused by excess fat. Hormone imbalances, anti-androgen medications, some antidepressants and anxiety medications, some antibiotics, steroid use, heart medications, and even alcohol can cause issues connected with gynecomastia. Liver and kidney problems connected with hormonal changes can also contribute to gynecomastia as well. Some men have to maintain body fat percentages well below average to avoid noticeable breast development. CoolSculpting is highly effective at mitigating the appearance of gynecomastia by significantly reducing fat deposits in the chest.
Some patients experience unwanted fat in their thighs even when other areas such as the belly look relatively slim. For some, thigh fat can cause real discomfort due to inner thigh rubbing while walking. For some, this can make leading a more active lifestyle difficult. CoolSculpting can help create “thigh gap” to prevent inner thigh rubbing.

Who Is A Candidate For CoolSculpting?
A fat-reduction procedure is specially designed for people with stubborn pockets of fat in specific areas. Unlike weight-loss surgery (e.g., gastric bypass), CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss solution for people who are obese or severely overweight. Good candidates for the procedure have noticeable fat in certain areas they’d like to get rid of, such as the lower belly bulge, the double-chin, or the “love-handles”. This is a great non-surgical alternative to liposuction.
Is CoolSculpting Dangerous?
No. The treatment is FDA approved and is shown to be a safe fat reduction treatment. Whereas liposuction involves invasive surgical procedures, CoolSculpting reduces fat without any incision or surgery. While this process is overwhelmingly safe, the treatment must be administered under the supervision of a medical director by trained and qualified medical staff.
Does CoolSculpting Have Any Side Effects?
During your treatment, you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations subside as the area becomes numb. After the procedure, side effects may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity. Sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental area treatment may occur. These effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks. Though rare, some additional side effects may occur. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if the procedure is right for you.
Does CoolSculpting Hurt?
Generally, no. However, as a powerful fat reduction technique, depending on the area, it is possible to experience soreness and tenderness during the weeks following your treatment.
During the first few minutes as the cooling begins, you will typically feel intense cold. This soon dissipates. With some applicators, you will feel some light pulling as suction is applied. The area generally goes numb within 5 to 10 minutes and remains numb for the rest of the treatment. After the treatment, you may feel some tingling as the area is massaged for 2-3 minutes. Patients are usually able to return to their daily routine immediately after treatment.
Is CoolSculpting Permanent?
Yes. However, that does not mean that unwanted weight can not return to the treated area if your lifestyle and diet is not kept in check. Patients who experience the most success are those who control their food, sugar, and alcohol intake as well as continue to stay active. The body has a finite number of fat cells. Additional gains in fat mean that the fat cells have expanded, not that additional fat cells have accumulated. CoolSculpting is one of the few non-invasive treatments that can reduce the number of fat cells by destroying them. Once destroyed, the body will not replace them.
Can You Do CoolSculpting At Home?
No. CoolSculpting uses precise methods to deliver a specific temperature to the fat cells and reduce the temperature of those cells to the precise point that causes the cells to break down. The vacuum action of the applicator is also a critical component in making cryolipolysis work successfully. The treatment took many years and clinical trials to perfect. Simply applying freezing temperatures to the body will not destroy fat cells and may even cause skin and nerve damaged if done in a prolonged manor.
How Long Does CoolSculpting Take?
Your certified specialist will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length of your treatment will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. At Metro Laser, we use the latest applicator technology which allows us to treat a patient in as little as 35-60 minutes. Most patients treat multiple areas during the same appointment. During your treatments you can read, check email, or even take a nap!
How Long Does CoolSculpting Take To Work?
You may start to see changes as early as 3 weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after about 2 to 3 months. Your body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to 4 to 6 months after your treatment.
What Happens If I Gain Weight After My Treatment?
Even though your treatment cycles physically destroy fat cells, it is possible to regain fatty tissue since, of course, not all fat cells are eliminated (nor would you want them to be). The good news is that it is perfectly fine to re-treat the affected area so that you can get back on track with your goals.
After seeing the results from their procedure, many people feel even more motivated to stay close to their ideal weight.
How much does CoolSculpting cost in Philadelphia?
CoolSculpting can cost between $600 and $900 per area and session. However, Metro Laser offers promotional pricing to new patients as well as affordable packages and payment plans through our easy qualify finance partners.
Just as every body is different, every treatment plan is different too! During your free consultation, our specialists will assess your desired areas to determine whether or not you are a candidate. From there, they will come up with a customized treatment plan to achieve your fat-reduction goals. Because of this, the cost will vary from person to person.
Is CoolSculpting Covered By Insurance?
No. CoolSculpting is an aesthetic and elective procedure and as such, insurance carriers do not pay for it. However, we do offer easy to qualify for finance and payment plans.
How Does CoolSculpting Compare to Liposuction?
Both Liposuction and CoolSculpting are body contouring and shaping treatments. However, that is where the similarity ends. Liposuction is a form of surgery. As such, it requires anesthesia or full sedation. CoolSculpting is not a form of surgery and does not require anesthesia. Further, unlike a surgical procedure, CoolSculpting can be performed in short sessions of as little as 35 minutes. CoolSculpting is typically less expensive than liposuction but this is dependent on the amount of fat that is needing to be reduced. For most of our patients, the procedure is recommended to be done over 3 or 4 “cycles” (visits) with several weeks between treatments. For these individuals, CoolSculpting tends to be the more affordable option when compared to liposuction although comparable results will take longer to achieve.

A Doctor's Take On CoolSculpting
Metro Laser’s medical director talks about CoolSculpting, his personal story, and how Metro Laser became a top CoolSculpting provider in Philadelphia.
“As a physician at Metro Laser, I was intrigued by the science behind CoolSculpting, which could help many of our clients look and feel much better in weeks without the use of anesthesia or downtime. We took a look at the clinical research and impressive results. If you look at the science, it has been known for decades that cold-induced transformation of fat works.
The principal of Cryolipolysis (destruction of fat cells at lowered temperatures) has been understood for a long time.
Researchers and scientists figured out that cold exposure can lead to fat cell resorption or fat cell death after noticing a correlation that children who sucked on popsicles frequently had less cheek fat than other kids. Imagine making that correlation and being able to design science to apply extreme cold in a safe, concentrated fashion to problem body areas where fat accumulates, like your love handles or flanks, thighs, abs, neck or chin fat!
Although the principles and research surrounding freezing fat were around for many years prior, developing a commercial treatment that could safely target fat without harming nerves or skin took a lot of development. Years later, the success stories number into the tens of thousands. The science is not new, it has just become more well known and more affordable to Americans in recent years.
My personal decision try this treatment for myself was related to my aging process, specifically with my slowing metabolism. I noticed this slowing initially in my mid-thirties and it really accelerated as I approached fifty. Being in the esthetic industry, I have always been active and I have taken care of myself, but I really developed a mid-section that I could not lose, despite working out and making dietary changes. I was fighting a losing battle. This wonderful technology has changed that to a battle won!
My treatments have given me back the body I had when I was in my twenties and thirties. In fact I have friends who see me at the beach and remark that I have “never looked better!”
I love CoolSculpting! It is a game changer and has helped me achieve the body that I am supposed to have! I feel smaller, look better in clothes and when I look in the mirror I cannot believe the changes that have occurred without the need for surgery or anything invasive. The fat has melted away. Who knew? And I owe this all to popsicles!
Metro Laser was established in 2004 and has grown to include three locations. Fat reduction without surgery is a natural complement to Metro Laser’s anti-aging and esthetic treatment options. For women, menopause can really affect the mid-section with changing hormones, which is why fat reduction treatments can provide relief and dramatic improvements on what naturally happens to a woman’s body. Good skin is important, but skin without a lot of underlying fat, is much better in my opinion! If you ask our clients and patients, they will also tell you of their wonderful success in their “treatment to transformation” journeys.
Our Metro Team is excited to show off our great fat loss results to everyone interested in become better and leaner. We are so excited about the results that my partners and I made the decision to rebrand Metro Laser as a CoolSculpting MedSpa and to provide the Philadelphia region with a top-notch fat reduction experience.”
