Laser Hair Removal is a safe and effective method of hair removal, but there are certain factors that can prevent you from being a candidate for this treatment.
There are several ways to prepare for your laser hair removal appointment:
Shaving: You must shave the area(s) being treated either the day before or the day of your appointment. The smoother the shave the better the treatment! You also must refrain from waxing/tweezing/bleaching/using hair removal creams for 3-4 weeks prior to your treatment.
Sun Exposure: It is very important that you keep the area(s) you are having treated out of the sun/tanning beds for 8-10 weeks prior to treatment, and continue to keep the area(s) out of the sun for 1-2 weeks after treatment. If you get spray tans or use tanning lotions, you must wait until your skin is back to its natural color before being treated.
Medications: Always let your laser technician know about all medications you are currently taking or have recently finished taking. This includes topical creams/ointments.
Make-Up/Deodorant/Lotions: The surface of the area(s) being treated must be wiped clean before treatment. Please remove all makeup, deodorants, lotions, creams, etc before arriving for your appointment, or arrive early enough to remove them before your appointment time.
Most people compare the feeling of laser hair removal to the snap of a rubber band. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different and some body areas are more sensitive than others. If you are concerned about discomfort, you can take an over the counter pain medication 1 hour before your treatment. We also sell a topical numbing cream that must be applied to the area 30-45 minutes prior to treatment.
After receiving laser hair removal treatment, you may notice small red marks on the area. These are completely normal and will go away in 1-7 days. You may also experience mild itching or irritation. An over the counter antihistamine should help manage these symptoms.
As long as you follow the instructions provided by your laser technician, there should be no major side effects. Factors like sun exposure, make up or other substances remaining on the skin, and photosensitive medications can cause burns that may last weeks or remain on the skin permanently. For this reason, it is very important that you communicate any of these factors with your technician before treatment. Our technicians have the right to refuse treatment if they believe you may be at risk for any major side effects
After your treatment, you can apply makeup and deodorant immediately if you’d like. We recommend that you avoid adding any additional heat to the area for 24 hours. This includes working out, hot showers, hot tubs, etc. Tight clothing may also cause irritation after treatment. You should also avoid sun exposure to the area(s) for 1-2 weeks after treatment.
It takes about 5-14 days after treatment for the hair to fall out. You may exfoliate the area(s) a few days after treatment to help shed the hair quicker. After that, you’ll see smooth skin for a few weeks/months depending on how many treatments you’ve had. You should schedule your next appointment based on the treatment schedule provided by your technician, which should be about 4-6 weeks depending on the treatment area.
After each treatment, you’ll notice less and less hair growing back. It will start to come back in slower, which allows you to space your treatments out farther apart, until eventually you won’t need to come in anymore!
You can certainly shave between treatments. In fact, we encourage it! You won’t need to shave nearly as often, but you may shave any hair that pop up between treatments until you’re ready for your next appointment. It is also required that you shave the area the day before or the day of your appointments.
It is not recommended that you perform any other form of hair removal between treatments. If you do need to wax/tweeze/use a hair removal cream between treatments, you must wait 3-4 weeks before coming in for your next laser hair removal appointment, and you still must shave before coming in.
For the best results, your laser technician will recommend a treatment schedule based on the growth cycle of your hair. Coming in too soon after your last treatment will make your next treatment ineffective. Laser hair removal only works when the area is treated during the right cycle of hair growth.
We recommend starting with at least 6-10 treatments for all body areas. However, laser hair removal results vary from person to person based on several factors. Certain body areas. such as the face and bikini area, are more hormonally controlled, which require more treatments than others. Also, there are certain ethnicities/skin types that are more resistant to laser hair removal, also requiring more treatments than other clients may need. The desired end result also impacts the number of treatments required. If your goal is just to thin the hair in the area, you may only need a few treatments until you see the result you were looking for. If your goal is smooth skin, you may need more treatments, and may need to come in for occasional touch ups as needed to maintain your results.
The Laser Hair Removal procedure provides permanent hair reduction. The hair that is removed will never come back, but new hair follicles may develop in the same area over the course of your lifetime which may spark new hair growth. However, laser hair reduction is proven to significantly reduce hair growth when parameters set forth by your laser technician are followed. This includes sticking to the recommended treatment schedule and adhering to the provided pre- and post-care instructions.
